Chalklines
Do you remember when?
Writing names in the sidewalk meant forever.
Chalk line drawn characters. laughter over nothiong more
than characterizations of the people we knew.
Does it bring a smile to your now grown-up face?
Does your heart beat a liitle now and again,
when your feet touch those cracked sidewalks
where dandelions grow up through the ridges,
Do you think of us.
Did you trip over the abandon chalk
left behind by the children?
Mother calling home for supper years ago.
"See you later"
" don't forget...."
I called out, and you didnot answer.
Someday we will meet once again on the broken trail
jumping the pieces of our thoughts,
dreams we had so long ago.
What happened to you I would say,
and would you apologize.
One day they will replace those sidewalks
build intersections and highways
broaden the horizons by condo's
yet our hearts will always yearn
for those times when nothing else mattered
but what we drew, how we played
and then how we walked away.
