Alone

I walk the same streets we walked.
Alone.
The emptiness in my breast,
A living thing.
The heels of my shoes,
Pound out
The beat of my heart.
Echoes bounce
Off the walls of my brain.

Faces once familiar, pass me by.
I do not recognize them.
The landmarks
Are unchanged.
The world is
The same as before.
Should this be?
How can change
Be unchanged?

You are gone.
Your footsteps
No longer match mine:
Footstep by footstep,
Heartbeat by heartbeat.
I walk these streets alone.
Your spirit has flown
Away from mine.
And I am undone.

Hi Debra, I loved the last line. It left me with a lingering after-taste.

A good poem will have the reader (me!) relating to every single line! I loved this. "The heels of my shoes pound out the beat of my heart" is very descriptive and thoughtful. Excellent job.

Perhaps "Old Friends pass me by." I agree that the point doesn't get across.

Thank you. This was done as a writing practice and it is some type of Indian style, which I cannot remember the name of. I'm trying to find out.

Thank you so much for taking the time to visit me. :-)

"A Very Special Child"

by Debra Shiveley Welch

God takes some sweetness from the Cherubs, music from the birds, laughter from the dolphins, and wraps them in love from the mother, placing them all carefully into the spirit of the unborn babe; a beautiful gift of life waiting to be placed in the arms of adoptive parents.
