'68

The world was wholly shocked and rocked
by daunting, haunting milestones
prodding the pinnacle
of madness and sadness
Amen you came into this world!

Times were tumultuous
notably in 'Nam
Reality was raging revolution
and gory as hell
though you couldn't tell

You were pure, innocent joy
a brand new bouncing boy
cradled up in the arms of the Lord
Glory!
Halleluah!

You were unfazed,
no eyebrow raised
about socio-political discord
you were just freshly cut from
the umbilical cord

God bless you could not
assess the assassination
of MLK Jr.
in your birth state
back in '68

and furthermore
that senseless shot
fired on Bobby Kennedy-
but one killer comprehendible
was your baby smile!

As your cradle rocked
so did the Beatles with
The White Album
along with the prevalent
Sgt. Pepper

Johnny Cash shook things up
within the confines
of a Bay area jail
and far beyond with
Live at Folsom Prison

In '68 you came to be
along with film ratings of
X, R, PG and G
and One Life to Live
debuted on ABC

Of all these I speak trivially
you were much more momentous
registering greater
than even the Sicilian quake
early in the year

Given the grave anxiety and fear
there still existed levity in the year
it came not with the space race
nor the musical Hair
but with you

How much more impressive is the birth of a child to the rush of the world. It's perspective we must see, and I like the perspective you have taken here. Just as important as the world news, is the personal appearance of a child. Good visual poem.

Good verse Marie. Really like the imagery and can recognize some of the double entenders. Super!

Damn, a lot happened in '68, huh. Though, it sounds like the most important thing that happened was a birth.
