Blissfully unaware

Broken, alone, that's the way it felt when the letter came. It was a simple court summons, but it was brought by police officer, and she was pulled out of class to receive it. It stated that she was being charged with harassment, a crime she had not the time or energy to commit. Both parents were in prison, and only a few weeks ago they had been home worrying about how the father had been charged with a crime that his kind heart could never commit.

It seemed like a bad dream, this horror show of being told that her parents and she herself were guilty. Her father had given up the fight, believing the lies his cheap lawyer gave. He had just admitted his guilt, a guilt that was not true, a guilt which didn't exist. Her mother, hysterical, had been charged with contempt of court. So there she sat nearly alone in the world, receiving a court summons for a bogus claim.

Her mother's family had started this, and those fools believed it too. They continued to spread lies about her and her parents. They all said she did it. Calling a number she did not know, saying words she would never say, and telling others to do those things, others she did not control. The world seemed to spin as she called the only family she knew was on her side in the state in which she lived.

The woman became furious, because she knew that what was being done and said was not right. Yet the woman could do nothing, for people who have never been in trouble before, and are not involved in law, often know not what to do. The rest of the school day became a continuous game of 'pass the letter around so that the group will know why you are crying'. The group still knows, even after those people won. It isn't fair, but then again nothing in life is ever fair.

There is something to be said about the way in which humans view the world they live in. It is to be noted how some are so happy that they become blissfully unaware of how tragic the world around them truly is. Others live their lives in hate, surrounded in feelings of despair and often times envy. It is the agenda of the envious human to attack, maim, and emotionally destroy the happy humans around them.

So what happens to that human who was once blissfully unaware of the hatred in the world? What happens when the envious human convinces the rest of humanity that there is some flaw within the happy human? That, that person has committed some sin? That they are guilty of some crime? Who then is left to exact revenge upon the envious human who has destroyed a perfectly good life? What is to be done to such a horrible person?

I love the story you have started. There is a strong character that I hope you will develop more in future additions. There was one grammer thing I noticed, which I may be totally wrong about. The sentence that ends "his kind heart could never commit." may need to be in past perfect (Coud never have committed) Just my opinion, but I think it makes the sentence stronger and tighter.
By the way, I really liked that you excluded the names of the characters. It gave a much more personal feel to the story, since everyone has been in a position like this at least once in their life.

Great start and I hope you post more.

Meletina, you have the framework here to expand into a much larger story. I see a solid plot potential and a main character that comes across as very interesting. I'm curious to see what you could develop from this. --Robert Barlow

I loved the message being portrayed in this short story. Those questions that were asked were really good questions. I only wish I knew the answer. This is a perfect view upon the human race, of the way our society is. Wonderful.
