My Name is Jamie
Allow me to introduce myself
My name is Jamie
And sometimes I am a girl.
I put my shoes on right, then left,
Because that's how they told me to.
The laces untie
But that's all right
They retie themselves every night
My name is Jamie
And Jeremy says I have to wear a dress
On his wedding day.
His girlfriend sneers
Because I am a boy sometimes.
I must take out my Sunday clothes
And disappear into the ether.
Allow me to introduce myself, please
I am polite
And succinct
And Jeremy says I can say what I want
Because I am a fine young lady.
My underground friends
Dig under the soil
And I wish I could dig with them
But I am a girl today
And fine young ladies don't sink into the stone.
My name is Jamie
I would introduce myself
But I don't think you would like it.

This is extremely well done. It has the feel of Emily Dickinson on antidepressants (I mean this as a compliment, as in the quality of Dickinson, but not so mopey.)

The gender roles placed on us by society can and perhaps at times should be crossed. We can only be true to ourselves, even if doing so other people, like Jeremy's girlfriend, might "sneer" at us. Excellent read.

i love the ending "I would introduce myself But I donā??t think you would like it." it just brings the piece to a higher level, i dont know why but its spiteful to me and i like it it
