City Smells~ In My Neighborhood

old man steve
on the corner
check'n the
neighborhood
beat

the summer heat
in the city
is no joke

he keeps his eye out
play'n chess with Juan

see'n the con
on the corner
try'n to get over

he's smell'n
like a rose
now that he's older
5-0 aint look'n
at him anyhow

the city streets
are filled with
the stench of
the young

hookers around the way
ass out look'n for some
try'n to get paid

mrs martinez
was one in her day
but now she says
they call themselves
escorts

a report
of the game
2 moves til checkmate

they debate
the state of the nation
the inner city situation
breath'n in the night air

stare'n at young maria
as she passes~hurry'n home
smell'n like Sunday afternoon
and church bells

the innocent predicament
of the knocked up
boys and old men
want that stuff

its not enough
that she's seen her
mom work'n double shifts
and gett'n hit

we hear it all
behind these paper thin walls

this is on the real
the sweet city smell

philly steaks
gangs~~rapes
grandma's calzones
kids hold'n their own

old men on the corner
stooped on their thrones
play'n chess

ol man steve
makes his confession
' I knew it was come'n'
checkmate

the connection
to the beat, the inner city heat
it smells like home to me..

You should ghost write for underground hip hop artists.

Nice, particularly like the later allusion to old man steve as he comes into play again. Nice job.

This flows slick and smooth and full of urban grace. I love the inclusion of proper names.

the city streets
are filled with
the stench of
the young

That's my favorite bit. Excellent read, M.

Nice. I really like the local dialect. It does a lot for the poem. Very good free verse.
