Thirteen Cats

Thirteen cats march single file
Along a wooden fence
Each moved as the one before it
Thirteen cats sat down as one
To stare with shining eyes
At the rising moon above
Thirteen copycats, mimicking

Thirteen cats shivered at the sight
Of a bottle of anti-freeze
Meowing and howling
Thirteen cats shrank back in fear
Paws over their noses
Such a comical spectacle
Thirteen scaredy-cats, frightened so

Thirteen cats hunted under the moon
Following tracks imprinted
Little pinpricks in the earth
Thirteen cats followed their prey
Like brush-strokes melting fast
Sticking to the shadows
Thirteen painted cats, master hunters

Thirteen cats dance along the jib
Of a boat out at sea
Lined up starboard to port
Thirteen cats singing loudly
Praising the One Who guides them
Voices reach over the waves
Thirteen sailing cats sail the sea

One man sitting up on deck
Watching the boat pull ahead
One woman sitting aft
Sails flitting over her head
Trails her fingers int he water
sailing along together
Two humans out at sea
Enjoying each other's company

Two humans lost at sea
Yet not lost at all, at all
God's grace carries them home
And thirteen cats for friends

Having lived with more than thirty cats in my second marriage of fourteen years, I must say I'm glad these cats didin't go for the antifreeze. Animals can't resist that stuff and it brings on a horrble death. I liked the surprise ending and if they have thirteen cats on that boat, there will be no rats.
