A little of me in you...

The need for physical interaction seems to be the number 1 priority in many people's minds. Sometimes there is not even a need for "hello, how are you?"s. My generation seems much more interested in what they can get and how quickly they can get it. No one is longer willing to work for something or someone even. Things such as love, change, family, and so on are forgotten in this race to the finish line.

This finish line that no one really knows what's beyond it...so, what's the rush? It's sad really when you sit back and think about it...if you have the time to sit back and think at all...how much you miss when you're not paying attention...when you're too busy fulfilling your physical needs...emotional ties are sorely lacking within us and between us...no one takes the time anymore to really get to know you...if there is nothing to gain from it then it's pointless...is it? Do friendships and relationships hold no value in our society anymore?

Certain ideas seem antique and layered with dust...almost foreign...dating seems to be becoming extinct among my age group...more and more it's becoming about how much you can get without really working at it...we are all guilty of it...the fun of the chase is gone...the excitement of the first kiss is something of the past...sex has replaced love and all that comes with it...we're just interested in the temporary and in the things that are tangible...you and I are tangible, isn't that enough?

Things that are temporary carry no weight...no real meaning...rarely is it something that you will carry throughout your life...sex...partying...are empty...they hold no true value...like counterfeit money...replacing the authentic and valuable...at the end of it all we all end up alone with nothing to call our own...

It bothers me how quick one is to go drink....or vote for the next American Idol...or buy the newest technology...but when you are asked to stand up and make a difference...to stand together with your fellow human beings...to say no to a war...to vote for the next president...where does all the urgency go? No one is willing to emotionally invest in a cause or a person anymore...

Was is it about getting emotions involved that seems to scare us away? Is it a fear of rejection or of failure? Have we become that lazy and filled with materialistic desires that there is room for nothing else?

The world is a beautiful place and we have so much to offer each other...if we would only stop for a minute and take in all that's around us...we need to take off our rose colored glasses and see the world for what it is...and take responsibility for our actions...we have moved so far from each other that a simple "hello" can cause anxiety...phone numbers aren't being exchanged anymore...emails are replacing letters and conversations...we continue to rid ourselves of real human interactions and thus rid ourselves of the opportunity to engage in something spectacular...a new friendship...a new relationship...or just the sheer pleasure of a great conversation between two people...we are letting these things be replaced with temporary things that only build more barriers...we've become selfish and care little about each other...but even so, underneath the cell phones, the computers, and so on...there is a fundamental need for human interaction...we need to be needed and want to need...we need to share ideas...dreams...fears...laughter...in order to feel whole and complete...because all we have is each other...but how easily we forget...

The title to this reminded me of a song.

Here it is:

"I'm Slowly Turning Into You"

I'm slowly turning into you
But you don't know this
Tell the truth
You say I'm lying and I never really tell you the truth
But your face is getting older
So put your head on my shoulder
Yeah, put your head on my shoulder

Yesterday it hit me that I do all the little things
That you do
Except the same little things that you do are annoying
They're annoying as hell in fact
It kinda struck a little bell in fact
I like to keep my little shell intact

And I'm slowly turning into you
And I'm slowly turning into you

Then something else came to mind
That was the mirror
It made everything clearer
That you're more beautiful compelling and stronger
It didn't take much longer
Just for me to realize I love all the little things
And the beauty that they're gonna bring
I dig your little laugh and I'm lovin' your quick wit
I even love it when you're faking it
And it might sound a little strange for me to say to you
But I'm proud to be you

And I'm slowly turning into you
And I'm slowly turning into you
And I'm slowly turning into you
And I'm slowly turning into you

I agree 100%. People never take the time anymore to really say something when they talk or to actually listen to someone else instead of just waiting his/her turn to talk again. Like the typical greetings, "How are you?" (this person more than likely doesn't really care) "Fine" (Rarely is someone fine all 24 hours a day 7 days a week, etc.)

It's funny, I was thinking about the deteriorating human interaction at Walmart the other day with the self checkout. I know it's not much, but it just made me think of what you so accurately pointed out, which I won't repeat because you just wrote a whole essay on it.

Sorry to leave such a long comment, you just totally hit on a topic that rubs me like sandpaper and I think you did an excellent job. Every aspect of the content is absolutely accurate and applicable today.

Way to write, I think this is a message the modern world is in desperate need to hear.
