Even Angels Cry

You placed me so high upon your pedestal,
I forgot how to breathe'
thin air making me light-headed;
I, who lived among the clouds,
who used to fly.

Angel, you called me,
radiant and perfect.
And angel I was, until I saw your face,
and knew I had mistaken Heaven
for the paradise in your embrace.

So I walked away from eternity,
to spend short days with you'
and gave up my wings
to fly in your arms.

But it was an angel you wanted,
and wingless, I lost your love.
I had sacrificed all for you,
only to find that you longed for
what was unobtainable.

Now flightless and broken,
I wander through endless days
bearing the weight of stranger's stares'
the ones who can see this fallen angel
with the tears on his face.

It is a very overdone theme, indeed!! But such fun to work in, despite that. This was actually done on request from a friend, with only the line "Even Angels Cry" to work from - I never expected it to come out as well as it did. Thank you so much... it's so good to hear that someone else enjoyed it!

Though the image of angels is very well-used, I always find myself loving poems about angels. I ghave written scores of poems about angels and they are really my favourites in a very self-indulgent way, so I totally see where you are coming from in this one.

I think it's so expressive and I understand it so well.

These lines:

And angel I was, until I saw your face,
and knew I had mistaken Heaven
for the paradise in your embrace.

blew me away.

Really. I like this one a lot.
