Words

There were so many things
I never told you-
the way your voice
seemed to have a tangible presence
in the way it touched me,
stroking all the places
that make me shiver.

Every breath you took in my ear
felt like soft kisses
on closed eyelids-
and behind your words,
I could hear you moaning my name
in short gasps of air,
and taste your sweat on my tongue.

I never told you
that we made love a thousand times
before you touched me once,
or that I memorized your phrases
so I could whisper them soundlessly,
feel the shape of them on my lips
when I needed you near.

I never told you-
and I'm glad.
Because you don't need to know
that I never let go of them.

You gave me your words, love,
and look-
I'm using them still.
