catholic....once

I was Catholic once
a pious, well-bred thing
bowing when the priest stood tall
knowing when and what to sing

I was Jewish once
Commanded by HIS word
Do it right or burn in hell
a message I clearly heard

I was Muslim once
and dressed to play the part
it was the one of many religions
filtered through my heart

I was Mormon once
quiet, normal, me
my voice was one of many
wrapped in saintly purity

I was Buddhist once
living the eight-fold path
never stepping out of boundaries
so as to avoid the banished wrath

I am something now
no faith, no lines to see
no bowing, singing, praying
just happy being me
