First Night in Venice
Restaurant reflections gleam darkly
on the Grand Canal; mirrored saffron lights
lap against bobbing gondolas.
Breathing antipasti scents under the Rialto,
we disembark beside a narrow alleyway
that tempts us into city's savoury depths.
Coffee perfumes us towards Piazza San Marco;
wisps of distant music dance between gracefully
decaying palazzos. Cool night air
opens fresh and magnificent into the square.
St Mark's, resplendent with Byzantine spice,
glitters greedy over late-night tourists.
'Musica' appears on the bill
alongside cappucino and Italian ice-cream
like an aromatic delicacy. Rose-petals scent
our honeymoon pillows as we sparkle
with champagne supper, blissful
like two buds in a secret garden.

| Nice thought. Brought back memories of a visit there. Tho the Bridge of Sighs that Casanova crossed from Doge's Palace to dungeon might also figure into the verse. |

| I've never been to Venice, but you make it sound delicious - breathing antipasti scents, coffee perfumes, Byzantine spice, cappucino and Italian ice cream and rose petals. Sounds very romantic especially the honeymoon pillows and champagne dinner. I love it. Beautiful imagery. |

Wow, you make the place sound tasty. I dont really have any critique on the poem, but enjoyed it. Feels like I've been there myself.
Thanks for sharing |

A visceral experience reading this poem. Never made it to Venice, but the atmosphere you present is very enticing. Most of the scents are covered beautifully, and there is plenty to soak in, but the poem never feels jumpy - it all falls into place coherently and you never lose us readers. Good stuff, enjoyed the read.

| This is much as I remember Venice. Thanks for helping me to recall it with your splendid details. I think the mix of sensory perceptions worked really well to invigorate your images. |
