Pretty
Could he ever
No
No
I'm not good enough
Too small breasts
nasty freckles on my face
He could never...
But what if I bought a dress
Black with straps in the back
and buried my face in make-up
to hide the freckles
Made myself look pretty
I could try not to show my teeth
When I smiled
Maybe he could see me
And think I'm pretty

Iteresting, it is very true.

This poem is very touching. I could easily imagine a young high school girl having these feeling. At 52 years old, it's now easy to say "Don't worry, in time, these things won't matter." But...I remember those years, and how difficult they can be. Beautifully written, Bryant.

I was thinking from perspective of a girl in high school when I wrote this, despite being a male who graduated a couple years ago. Odd things occur to me sometimes.
