Waybread

In the cool morning

It was not the food each was seeking
but
tokens of warmth
nibbles of sustenance
exchanged in the velvet dark -
Waybread for wayfaring companions.

The nourishment they each sought
would come at the end of other journeys.

And be shared
with other travelers.
