We Were Soldiers

(inspired by the movie)
We were in the army
We were men
We were brothers with a purpose
We were husbands
We were fathers
We were sons
We were soldiers.

We were planners
We were leaders
We were followers
We were trainers
We were trainees
We were soldiers.

We carried weapons
We carried loads on our backs
We carried our weary bodies to the finish
We carried our fallen to leave none behind
We carried on
We would carry on, even if
We would be carried home
We were soldiers.

We were shipped out
We were shot at--
we were engaged in combat
We were firing
We were killing
We were being killed
We were dying for our country
We were killing them for theirs
We were all men on opposite sides trying to complete our missions
We were courageous
We were soldiers!

This piece truly gripped me from beginning to end! The following lines, especially tugged at my heart:
We carried our weary bodies to the finish/We carried our fallen to leave none behind/We carried on/We would carry on, even if/We would be carried home/We were soldiers.

I have many family & friends who've served or are currently serving our country. I think this is a lovely tribute to them all.

Excellent poem. I find you chose powerful sentiments and put them together in such a provoking manner.

I lost the "We were" precursor to each line somewhere around the middle of the piece. Consider transferring some of the lines into more of an image rather than a litany. Perhaps march them in a file past the reader. Put us in the reviewing stand and let us see your face tell me that yes, you are all these things, but first you are a soldier...

Thanks for sharing your poem.

So true and told so well... You had me back in uniform marching with you and that's quite a feat! Your words bring back a lot of memories.
