The Internet, would you miss it? Has it changed your life?

Remember when, way back when, we didn't have the Internet, home computers, cell phones, ipods (I still don't), Blackberry's, and all the things that make our lives simpler now.

My aunt bought my cousin an Apple computer when they first came out. He always had all the good video games too that we could plug into the t.v. and play- Intellivision I think it was called. Pong! I loved Pong. He knew how to work electronics before electronics became a popular trade to be in. He was a nerd. A computer nerd before there were computer nerds- well, home/school computer nerds.

I was thinking today how many people I have met since I have had the Internet.

I was thinking about how many people that I know in my real living life that I have neglected since I have been involved with my 'friends' inside this box.

I was thinking about how many phone calls I have not made to my family because the computer has taken over parts of my life that I never knew I had.

I was thinking about how many visits, by car, I have not had because I am "surfing" the darn Internet.

Have I missed out on conversations? Seeing loved ones? Talking to them? Maybe, maybe not. I was never one to take off to visit or talk on the phone anyway, but you never know.

Then, there's the cell phone. My husband is on it all day long for work, then making calls when he gets home, getting calls, ect.... I get a new one everytime he does. But, I rarely use it. It's for emergencies, right. I forget it when I leave the house. I forget to turn it on. I leave it in the car when I go shopping. I forget to plug it in, so then the battery is dead and it doesn't work anyway. You would rarely see me talking on the cell when I am walking down the cereal aisle, in the car, in the parking lot, shopping, ect.... unless, perchance, I have it on, available, and if I hear the thing ring and answer it to find my other half on the other end wanting to know where I am, when I will be home, and why is it taking me so long.... Ergo, why I don't care to have it with me. Ah, but, if I ever need it in an emergency, sure hope I have it ready and with me!

Some people wouldn't even remember life without a cell phone or what they would do without it with them.

Some people wouldn't want to remember what life was like without all of these gadgets that we "have" to have.

Had I not "met" you, would you have missed out on anything? Would it have mattered, really? Would your life be any different without me in it- here?

Our writing, especially blogs, tell a lot about a person. We learn so much about the personalities of each other, the things we like, the things we dislike, what we do for fun, where we go, what we do for a living, pictures/photos of where we have been, things we like to wear, eat, say, love........... Yeah, we get to "know" each other pretty well through blogs and our writing.

Writing tells the story more about us than we would ever find out in real life. I know that. We feel more free to put it down in a blog what we would never say out loud. We feel unencumbered too because noone can see us-

Yeah, we know each other pretty well actually.

Would you miss me or would I miss you if either of us left? Probably.

Most definitely.

Are you happy with what you have accomplished on the Internet? The people that you have met? The things that you have learned? Has it made your life better, are you a better person for it?

Would you miss it if it disappeared?

I don't mind going back to my pen and paper and books, which I do all the time. Archaic- simple- freeing and so much less baggage.

Books, paper and pen- THOSE I would miss.

Happy thoughts to you.

I am hoping not.
Let's keep it on the positive side.

Maybe, just maybe, it will save the world, eh.

What a sweet comment Sarra, thank you.

Although, the lack of exercise really is killing us, isn't it. I move from one computer to the next from the moment I wake up. Dang internet... ;)

this has to be one of the most true statements in short story/blog format I've ever read. I think for all that technology does for us (key words, "For us") it's also going to be our ultimate decline. Think on it. Soon we'll have moving sidewalks, self driving cars, flying cars, you name it. Where will our exercise go? Will things soon think for us too?

It's a scary, scary thought.

You know about the Luddites?

A letter sent to an Huddersfield millowner in 1812 "Information has just been given that you are the owner of those detestable shearing frames, and I have been asked by my men to give you a warning to pull them down. If they are not taken down by the end of next week, i shall send at least 200 men to destroy them. If you fire at my men, they have orders to murder you and burn all your houses. Go to your neighbours and inform them that the same fate awaits them if their frames are not taken down.

Signed by the general of the army,
Ned Ludd"

At one point, the British Army had more troops fighting the Yorkshire and Lancashire textile workers than Napoleon 1....what would good old Ned have made of t'internet..?

I'll take that ticket! :)

It just seems to be moving so fast. So fast. I love the internet though. It has made my life so much easier.
