Ex-Big Dreamer
Santa Fe Avenue stretches across the city
From far urban north to deep country south,
Through ghettos and graffiti
To a surprising outskirt
With big beautiful neighborhoods,
One of which a lovely couple calls home.
Luisa drives through her neighborhood palace
To her effortlessly elegant house castle.
Her castle greets her as a path emerges between bastions.
She vanishes under a large archway beneath the house;
Its eyes, composed of the daintiest glass,
Sparkle as it watches its queen arrive.
Once Luisa would drive through the neighborhood
And she and her boyfriend would sigh.
Though they wished to live amongst the royalty,
She knew that they couldn’t get here on just her writing alone.
All the while, their stomachs rumbled, complaining
Of their lack of funds to afford a feast.
She didn’t need a nine to five. She was told
“My lady will never have to work.”
So he gave her the only job she had ever wanted:
To love, care, and write-
Though when the pages were blank,
Their bellies didn’t need to complain.
On the weekends, they relax on a swing
Watching the wind rustle the leaves
And sweep them across their yard,
As the peaceful creak of the porch swing
Lulls the worry free couple to a serene sleep,
Leaving them safe in a universe of their own.
