Memories: Gulls #2

Again, this is a memory from my stint in the Coast Guard.

As I said in my last ‘Memories: Gulls’ story, we were kept at the dock, because of bad weather. The crew was going nuts, to say the least!

The yeoman, a real pothead, decided that he didn’t like the seagulls screaming all day. The sounds were really getting to him!

He wanted revenge!

He procured a bunch of hot dogs and a coil of marlin (a type of strong string used aboard ships) then went up onto the main deck. There he set his booty down.

For the next fifteen minutes he tied pairs of hotdogs together with about two yards of line between them.

When that task was done, he drew a large flock of the voracious birds to the ship by tossing small pieces of the dogs into the air. The raucous birds swirled, swooped, and squawked.

His final revenge was to toss the dogs that were tied together, into the water.

Gulls would dive down and swallow a dog whole and then attempt to fly off. I say attempt, because each time the bird would lift off, it would be pulled back down again. This was because the other end of the line was attached to another dog inside of another bird! The Yeoman was beside himself with mirth as he jumped up and down, laughing at the antics of the poor captive creatures.

For those that are concerned about the fate of the gulls, don’t be. The strings would cut through the dogs as they tried to fly away. After a few tries, the string would fall away, and the birds would finally escape with their dinner.
