Marquis and Kate
"I cant believe you lied to me!" Kate screamed, face flushed. "You're married..."
The Marquis de Lafayette tried to touch her arm however she pulled away and shot him an angry look, a deeply hurt look. Tears had begun to accumulate behind her bright eyes. He felt her pain as he looked into her eyes, and that suddenly caused his heart to break. Seeing Kate in pain was the hardest thing for Marquis to handle. "Kate, please...Im sorry I didn't tell you! Please allow me to explain myself to you." he pleaded.
"You should have explained yourself in the beginning...before-" she cut herself off.
"Before what Kate?"
She paused, "Why should I tell you Marquis? None of it matters anymore, you have a wife back in France. Your heart is already taken. Im foolish...a silly silly girl."
Marquis eyes never left Kate's now pale face. "My heart is taken however not y the woman you suspect, Kate."
Confused and very hurt Kate turned from Marquis, wanting him to end the torture and leave her to cry. However leaving without every looking back was the last thing that the Marquis de Lafayette was going to do. His feelings of affection and lust for Kate had grown far past his ability to control, nothing could make him leave her, not now.
Silence fell between the two, Kate's back to Marquis, a tear slowly falling down her face, tickling her velvety skin. Never had Kate allowed Marquis to see her cry, and today was no exception. Neither of them really knew what to say to the other, Marquis was terrified that he was going to lose her, and Kate heartbroken that her perfect Marquis, her friend, then man she loved had lied to her.
Slowly Marquis took a step toward her. "Kate, I didn't tell you I am married because my marriage was arranged. My family wished for it so both families would benefit, become more rich and powerful." he began to explain.
"What is your point?" she whispered, hiding the way her tears shook her voice.
"My point is, I do not love my wife Kate. I never have. Our union was not of our choosing...it was our families. If we had the freedom to choose whom we married she would have chosen another man...and I would have waited for you. Kate, I want to be with you, grow old together." He expressed, his emotions in control.
Kate turned slightly, just enough to look into his eyes. She searched him, studied him, wanting to know if this confession was truth or just a story...another lie. She didn't want to be upset and angry with her beloved Marquis, she just wanted to hold him and love him, but if he didn't feel the same way, truly love her back she wanted him to leave. "We could never have a life together, you are married and live in France. Marquis, what if I ever wanted to be married to you, or have children? That could never happen and you'd always be gone, how could you expect me to live like that?"
Suddenly Marquis became even more serious, if possible. "Kate, do you love me? I need to know." he began, his tone urgent. "When you said that you wished I had told you the truth in the beginning...and said, before, what did you mean?"
Kate's anger subsided, but the hurt still remained and now she felt vulnerable. "It doesn't matter anymore Marquis."
He got closer, and she backed up, her back now against the wall. Again he took another step, their feet two inches apart and their faces almost touching. Marquis touched her soft face. "Please, I need to know."
She looked away, but he brought her face back to him, "Do you love me?"
"It doesn't matter!" she yelled.
"Ill be the judge of if it matters or not!"
"Stop yelling at me!"
"Ill stop yelling when you tell me! Please Kate!"
she gave him another wounded look. "Im not answering your question!" she argued.
Suddenly he grabbed her wrists and slammed them into the wall, holding her there tightly." Kate, I need you to."
"No, you want me to!"
She tried to push him off of her, but he countered, putting one of his knees between her legs, making sure she couldn't escape him. "Kate, I love you!"
"If you truly love me, you wouldn't have lied to me all this time, led me on!"
Marquis dropped his head, his blond hair pulled back but the same two strands of hair that always escaped hung down over his face. He shook his head slightly, in defeat it almost seemed, then he looked back to Kate. "Kate...I am try8ing to set things straight, I want to be with you. Believe it or not, I love you."
Tears were now streaking down her face in large, oval beads, her cheeks pink. Her eyes would not leave his, but it was hard for her to continue looking, her heart breaking. She wanted to speak, wanted to tell him how much she loved him however something was holding her back
Marquis let go of her and slowly walked away, hands on his hips. Silence fell between the once again. "Farmer..." he breathed." Do you love him?"
"How could I?"
"That's why your so angry...because you are a Patriot and he is a soldier for the King's army."
"That's absurd!" Kate cried, taking a few steps toward Marquis.
He suddenly turned once again, to look into Kate's face, he was livid. "Really Kate? Just tell me the truth, you don't love-" but he never got to finish, Kate had advanced on him and took his face into her hands, kissing him deeply and heatedly.
