Dearest John
(Note: We had to write a letter in school in the voice of Abigail Adams. She wrote letters to her husband, President John Adams. I thought I would add this to my collection. )
Dearest John,
I arrived in the year two thousand and seven with no expectations. For that very reason, I allowed myself to be open to how much society has transformed. I have discovered the very peculiar facts that come with this era. I have observed women more than anything.
I was pleased to find that women have occupations and as many options as men. Today, they are not staying home with their children which at first I found irresponsible. However, I have revised my initial thoughts and have decided that this is truly something spectacular. For the first time through my eyes I see that women have the right to choose. Some might speculate that there are by far too many choices, but as you know I would disagree with that. Women have been liberated in a way I had always hoped.
Speaking of choices, women now have the right to fight in war. They can enlist in the army and fight on the battlefield beside men. My only reservation was that the women were not at home with their children. I cared for our children when you were off gallivanting in your politics and war but it was something I truly felt I had to do, a duty, if you will. I see that these women feel that it is their duty to fight but I still cannot help but think of the children.
Another thing I am pleased to inform you of is that everyone is entitled to an education and it is actually required by law! When I say everyone I mean everyone. All different characters of people, all different colors as well as women have the right to learn. I have always felt that education is something to be appreciated.
People in this era have their downfalls. Nothing is perfect. For one thing, politics have gotten even nastier than they were when you ran for election. Politicians seem to beat another down so far that it really starts to change the opinions of the American public. It almost makes you want to turn away and cringe. The vulgar language of the two running for office is so upsetting Also, on a different note, families are separating at a rapid pace. Wives are divorcing their husbands. Husbands are divorcing their wives. Relationships do not seem to stick. It has made me realize that our relationship with each other is one of a kind. Divorce seems to be a common thing now and it is unbearable. To see families break apart so fast makes me think that they really don’t understand the vow of marriage in the first place.
Now John, I see things progressing even more in the future. It is difficult to comprehend how things in our lives can change so drastically in a number of years. It proves that life has it’s own course; it’s own kismet. I would have to say that things are just going to keep revolving and transforming. I can see how freedom has found its place in everyday life and how the people of today hardly notice it. It troubles me to see children not pledging to our flag but I have to come to terms with it all. As life changes, rights accommodate how the people live. I expect there to be even more alterations in the future.
Love Always,
A. Adams
