Flame Willow
Seeds should never be planted.
Yet we insist on fire orchards.
A maze of terrain
Creates ash-dusted corners.
Let fire burn to others.
Soot falls soft, cushions the ground.
Two trees are made one by red leaf,
Burn to share every plant around.
Wet leaves extinguish flames.
There is no bringing back.
The fire forever gone.
Vibrant red to black!
The branches intertwine;
As do the roots below.
When the fire burns the branch
The share leaf too must go.
Most trees let roots die:
No water, dried up, cracked, and then dust.
The Flame Willow has eternal roots;
The branches are weak, but roots shine through the rust.
The willow hardly burns.
(The branches are the easy problem to see.)
Wet, bent over, hung down low,
No where close to the fire of other trees.
But the roots stay strong,
Nurtured by memory beneath the ground.
All the fire gone, the memories stay.
This is why the Flame Willow's branches hang down.

The burdens of the past
How long do they last?
Share not the willows fate
When roots pull down, eager
To take your flame
below the ground.
Instead, tree
flare full in the sun
Devour and pound
Break free those roots
and sink not below the ground

I wondered if this was about the birth of a child, the breakup of a marriage and the child having to go with one parent. However, the other parent holds dear the memories and does not forget the child. An enjoyable read, which I've interpreted in my own way. When I write poetry I do not necessarily punctuate or use capitals: it depends on the reader to take what they can from it.

I agree with Maggie May. I really like your unique style. And your imagery is very strong.

I like this... the symbolism is mind-boggling..and teh imagery made my senses tingle (I know...weird things happen when I read poetry ^_^) but .. I liked this. And I find, I've gotten a special fancy for those pieces featuring fire..this is only another piece to add to my favorites ...thank you =)
