Beyond The Border

The silence was revolting. No one had said a word for nearly 3 hours now. We were all scared to even whisper amongst ourselves. The van stopped several times and the stench of the two musty old men was so overwhelming I felt like vomiting. As much as it had rained you’d think they would have at least bathed as best as they could in the rain water. I believe that the baby not crying was one of the reasons that I held on so dearly to the silence and just bided the time. Not too much farther and we’d have been home free.
I was deep in thought about the next thing we were going to be up against and that was finding work. Thank God it was summer and wasn’t going to be cold so we could sleep outside if necessary. All of a sudden the van doors open and the customs men were searching the van. My heart dropped as I realized once again I was going to make it beyond the border of Canada. Amazing that one would think they’d be leaving the land of the free to escape the poverty that our country was experiencing.

I was definitely surprised by the ending here to find out people were fleeing the U.S. to Canada. I see your comment that you were thinking of Mexicans, but the change is refreshing. Maybe because I would like to flee to Canada too.

lol .. when I wrote this I had an image of mexicans crossing the border here but then I thought about how much I loved Canada when I lived there and decided that seeing the bull we are going thru here it fit perfect to change it to the Canadian border. ( Longing to be Canadian ) :)

Hi Alma,

The strongest aspect of your story is your last line. It ties everything up, neatly. It made me sit back and think two things: Ah, it all makes sense. And secondly, yeah, that's right, Canadians rock and I'm proud to be one. :P haha

Okay, that's enough of my lame humour for the day.

Thanks for the read.
