A Path of Shattered Dreams

Things were finally looking up for Kaycee. She had her friends and for the first time, she was seeing someone who was crazy for her. Carter and Kaycee had been going out for a couple of weeks and everything seem to be going great.
Carter calls her everyday to tell her, “You already got me falling for you already”.
“Kaycee I don’t know what you see in that boy. There’s something about him. I can’t put my hands on it but he seems sneaky to me,” Claricee said.
“Claricee, I know you are my best friend and all but Carter is far from sneaky. You just don’t know the sweet side of him like I do.”
“What is that Kaycee, the side of him that likes to say whatever it will take to get you out of your panties?”
Kaycee stood beside Claricee surprised, by her comment. She left without a word.
Carter was the only person she felt comfortable talking about Claricee with. He listened attentively to Kaycee as she expressed her anger and hurt. Kaycee loved how Carter was being a good friend at that moment, even though Claricee hadn’t done the same.
“Hey baby, you want to go to the movies tonight?” Carter asked her, once they arrived in front of her sixth period.
“Sure, what movie did you have in mind?” Kaycee secretly hoped it would be something romantic and not scary.
“I don’t know yet. Be ready by six o’clock and I would know by then. Okay?”
“Okay, Carter, I will see you then,” Kaycee said as the final bell rang for class.
That night they ended watching a movie at his parents’ house. Kaycee was expecting to see Carter’s parents at home. No one was home except for them. Kaycee knew her parents wouldn’t have agreed to this but at that moment the only thing she cared about was being with Carter.
When they arrived to Carter’s house he held her hands as he led her up the walkway to unlock the door. They headed directly towards his parents’ room.
Nervously, Kaycee followed, not knowing how far she would allow this to go. Pulling her down on the bed Carter grabbed a condom he had in his pocket.
“Baby, I think it is time for us to go all the way, don’t you?” Carter asked.
“Uh, I don’t know Carter do you th-th-think we are ready for that?”
Kaycee didn’t think she was ready but she did not want Carter to become upset with her. Kaycee was a virgin and she knew the same couldn’t be said for Carter. He told her he had only been with two girls sexually.
Of course Claricee heard different, a girl in her class claimed she slept with Carter her freshman year and he used her for sex.
“Look Kaycee, if you don’t want to that’s fine, but I don’t know how much longer I can continue dating you if you are going to act like you are still in junior high and not high school.”
Kaycee decided to give in and show Carter how much she did care for him. Pain pierced through her as Carter entered her. Carter began to grunt, in a matter of minutes it was over and Carter rolled off her. Kaycee looked over at him and realized he had lied to her.
“I th-th-thought you said you were using a condom, Carter?” Kaycee yelled.
With a smirk Carter looked at her, “Oh yeah….I thought it would feel better if I didn’t use it. I mean you are a virgin, I know I don’t have anything, and beside that you can’t get pregnant the first time.”
Kaycee started crying and ran to the bathroom. As she sat there, Claricee voice echoed through her head, he seems sneaky to me. Thinking about those words angered Kaycee. When she walked out the bathroom, Carter was standing at the door ready to take her home. Carter cranked his music up, leaving no room for talking.
When pulled into her driveway, Carter turned to face Kaycee. “Hey, look… I really do like you but, we need to take a break for a while. I mean don’t get me wrong, but I need to buckle down since this is my last year in high school. You know?”
Kaycee jumped out the car and ran in the house. How dare he use her like that and then toss her aside! She was heartbroken and hurt.
Kaycee believed everything he told her.
The next morning her mother reminded her about her two o’clock doctor appointment she had scheduled. She was going to the gynecologist for her yearly check up. As she lay there on the doctor table, the night before kept playing over in her head and the pain refilled her broken heart.
A week later her doctor had called her mother, “Hi Katie, I got Kaycee’s test results back and would like to go over them with you both.”
While sitting in the door office all Kaycee could think about was Carter. How she missed his smell, laugh, or anything else she could think of. Her mother sat next to her reading a Vogue magazine she’d found in the waiting room.
The door finally opened and the doctor walked in.
“I am sorry to tell you this, but Kaycee, we ran STDs tests also and one them came back positive. I don’t know any other way to say this. Kaycee, you are HIV positive.”
Kaycee felt like she was in a nightmare, did the doctor just say she was HIV positive? There is no way, how in the hell did she get it? Then she remembered that night with Carter and how he chose not to wear a condom. Closing her eyes as the tears begin to fall, Kaycee knew life for her would never be the same.
One mistake, one time, and that’s all it took. Kaycee use to dream of a future filled with college, getting married, and then raising a family. Now her future is filled with sickness and death, all it took was one mistake.
