Higher Education

I came here with a desire to learn
Trying to better my future
And to teach my daughter
That she can accomplish
Anything she sets her mind to

But as I sit here in this institute of education
I am surrounded by the chatter
of useless matters
And I can’t help but wonder
Why are they here?

Do they thirst for understanding?
To learn?
Expand their minds?
Or are they simply wasting time?
Trying to slide by
Never working hard enough to care.

They seem so self absorbed
Consumed in cycles of non-stop drama
Trapped inside a box
Their view limited to the mirror
Hardly thinking beyond this moment
or beyond the orthodox

Is this the future of our world?
Society’s hope and pride?
Are they all what they seem?
Mindless, media driven,
Products of tradition?
Or is their more that they keep hidden?
And I wonder
Do they also look at me and question, why?
