Modern Wars

we crave our daily fix
to make our conscience feel
we’ve done our duty
by tuning in
for half an hour
to view the image of disaster
then after
we change the channel
curious to see
which desperate housewife finds relief
tuning out reality
until casualty
hits home
for morality’s sake
we take a stand
for or against
either way
we still make wars
everyday
starting battles
over things
that just don’t matter
trampling every enemy
that stands in the way
of our American dreams
I wonder
Is this what the Declaration means
by
“Life, Liberty and The Pursuit of Happiness?”
to look out for ourselves
with no regret
about the mess
we left
behind us?
