The Gap Between Us

As I look at you
I notice the unspoken
What others easily dismiss
Your features communicating ignorance
Your actions.. Indifference
Every insincere glare…
Quick to pass judgment
While you snicker insults
Just loud enough for them to hear

Your callous heart exposed
Identified by these unorthodox eyes

Eyes that look at diversity as a gift
Eyes that see with acceptance
Eyes filled with respect
For all who live and breathe
The same polluted air as me
Sharing burdens of this world
As equally.. And sometimes more..

Yes.. As I look at you..
I can not help but wonder

Do you think of those who pass you by?
Do you ever question the reasons
You despise them so?

Can your finite mind
Expand
To step outside convention

To see a human life as more than flesh and bones?
More than an idealized tradition?

Try if you can to see the soul of man
That lies beneath what’s seen
Beyond Society’s illusion
Our fairy tale of happy ever after
Defining who we are by the
Value of our assets

When I look at you ..
I see myself
For the gap between us
Is not as far as you would
have yourself believe
