Island (story challenge 19)
My street is populated by old people. They hate noise. Anything above a whisper is a cacophony, anything prolonged is a din. The elderly lynch mob visited my house when an ear infection made me watch television louder than usual.
It’s tiring. So we laid our ring of explosives, and blew a trench ten feet deep around our house. It’s filled with water now.
No one complains about people who live on islands.

Ha! I really liked how you set the story up and we're so matter-of-fact when creating your island, as though explosives of that magnitude are so readily available. Talk about noise to disturb the elderly neighbors!
Great flash piece, Icy. |

Very good, Icy - here's hoping they're rubbish swimmers.
Just one thing - I'm not convinced you can 'watch television louder' - you can have it louder, you can listen to it louder, but not watch, I don't think.
Cheers

I love the phrase "elderly lynch mob." It evokes some mad imagery in my mind. I enjoyed the last line of the piece as well. Good job.

This is a whole philosophy in a small package.
"No one complains about people who live on islands"
I like the way this sentence sums up the whole thing. |

Your flash is always so fun to read, Icy. Like Grae, I enjoyed the image of an "elderly lynch mob." And the use of explosives to deal with annoying neighbors gave me a sense of deep personal satisfaction.
Was it Sartre that said "Hell is other people"? I wonder if his neighbors drove him nuts, too. |
