Facade

I face another day
When all I really want
Is to stay away, away
From people, away
From it all.

Instead,
I open my closet, blinded
Momentarily by the
Light of the
Cloaks of happiness
Hanging within.

Too tired
To make a decision,
I close my eyes and
Lay my hand blindly
On today’s disguise.

I don
The cloak, smile my
Fake smile and
Begin. “How are you
Today?” “Have a
Good day.” “Thank
You for coming.”

Finally,
The day is over. I
Lock the
Door and notice
My cloak

Has lost its sheen.
It falls off
My shoulders,
Pooling in darkness
At my feet.

I feel like this at times. I believe there are times in everyone's life when they just don't feel like facing another day. Great Job..

You express the feelings so well. I've been here. Thankfully less frequently as I age. But it's a place I can always see from the corner of my eye. Very well written. Anna

Thanks to everyone for their comments. I suffer from chronic depression and I wrote this when I was in one of my dark days. It is how I feel when everything seems bleak. On my good days, my reality is I am an outgoing, gregarious person who can't wait to get to work to interact with people. On my bad days, I have to put that "cloak" on in order to be able to function.

Wow. I love the use of "face" in the first sentence, and also how the "cloak of happiness" fades away into the reality of darkness, and the underlying idea that the only way to be real is to not be in contact with others- but then my question to you is: is reality only how one acts in private? Or can that include the person you become when interacting with other people, which takes up the majority of your everyday life? Can there be this duality?
