The call of your soul
Materialism blinds our society
Stuck in our hearts like a knife
Seeking peace that lasts eternally
More than a page in the book of life
A search for answers
A quest into the soul
Who am I?
What am I?
Where am I?
Why am I?
Do you dare to ask
See what’s behind your mask
Step right out of the crowd
Say it clear and loud
I believe if given time, we’d all realize
That we pay the highest price
Money being the centre of our life
Must be fatal in the end
Money is nothing more than a bribe
Your soul slipping through your hand
Can you see the end?
It’s drawing closer with each moment
Watching the nightmare, your hands bent
Now in prayer seeking your Gods
Who are you now?
What are you now?
Where are you now?
Why are you now?
A traitor who only allows the soul to fly
When there’s something money can’t buy
For the search of yourself it may be too late
You might be struggling with your fate
Understand that money is nothing more
than paper opening materialistic doors
will be the biggest reward
though it can’t be ignored
It buys food and takes you to places never heard
With your soul never to be discovered
Standing at the end of the road you’ll say it out loud
This never could be what life’s all about
So step out of the crowd and find yourself
In astonishment you’ll learn
Who are you?
What are you?
Where are you?
Why are you?
Only then you’ll fathom of the meaning of it all
And you know there is a greater call
The call of your soul
The call of you, your very self
And to know without a doubt
that understanding what it is to be human
is what it’s all about.

I wish that were true. I do feel we need to sport a "lifestyle" that is defined by the objects and activities we buy. I say European because materialism has taken a hold of Europeans strongly only recently. Our cultures were stronger. This is all subjective, of course.

Thank you. I believe fulfilment of shopping lasts til you unpack at home. Generally, true joy comes from deep bonds with friends and loved ones. Btw. I do not think it is purely a European issue but a sign of the times affecting people over the world.

I see this as a performance poem, with its strong rhyming. But I think it wouldd demand a lot of acting to pull it off because of the question lines. I think the sad part is that now we Europeans define ourselves with what they buy (holidays, mobile phone chimes). The sad thing is that we ARE fulfilled by it.

Thank you - and indeed this is a very old poem I have written many years ago. I agree with your ideas on making the flaw better and intend on putting it into practice. I appreciate your comments !
