New Year, Old Friends (Scenes 1-12)

(Note: Contains some mild swearing)

EXT. APARTMENT COMPLEX - EVENING

Superimpose: New Years Eve 2006 9:00 PM

A car is seen rolling through the parking lot in search of a suitable place to park. The car finds a spot and squats. The car is turned off and all four doors open up and people step out. A total of five. Apparently it was pretty crowded in there. The five people, three guys and two girls, begin walking up towards the apartment building in front of them. They enter through the main door.

INT. APARTMENT COMPLEX - CONTINUOUS

The group walks in and starts heading for the elevator. Standing in front of the elevator are people they apparently know. They walk up and begin talking. Menial banter is exchanged as they all wait for the elevator to return to the main floor. Finally it does and all of them step inside.

INT. APARTMENT COMPLEX - THIRD FLOOR - CONTINUOUS

The elevator door opens and everybody files out and starts walking down the hall. Eventually they come up to a door and knock on it. It begins to open

I/E. APARTMENT 3015 - CONTINUOUS

DOUG
Hey! Welcome to club thirty fifteen, the only place to be for New Years two thousand six!

The group of people enter the apartment and see that the party has started already. About twenty or so people are socializing with each other, most with drinks in their hands. It is easy to see that a young adults party, mostly 20 somethings, is taking place inside this well sized apartment.

Our attention is shifted over to the dining room table where about six or seven people have gathered.

ZACK
Then I was like.. that’s what she said!

Everybody at the table starts laughing as the joke teller looks around at everybody as he laughs. We continue to go around the room seeing how each person is spending their time at this party. Our focus quickly goes back to the table where everybody is still sitting and talking.

ERIC
So is everybody here? Are we missing anyone?

INT. ADAM’S HONDA - NIGHT

This 2002 jet black Honda Accord runs smoothly as it cruises down the street. The Doors’ “Light My Fire” is just beginning and playing softly through the car speakers. In the driver’s seat sits ADAM, a young free spirited man that is constantly on the go. His long, wavy brown hair is tied loosely behind his head as he surveys the traffic in front of him. He checks his mirrors and then adjusts the glasses that rest on his nose. He then idly scratches his scruffy facial hair.

BRIAN
So what are we doing tonight?

BRIAN sits in the passenger seat. Brian is Adam’s best friend and it has been that way for as long as either of them can remember. An earnest man that is steadfast in his beliefs and stubborn in his ways. Brian shakes his head to get his messy brown hair out of his eyes, he then places a baseball cap on top of his head.

ADAM
Well I got some inside information from Jordan that Doug and Zack are having a nice little get together at their place. Apparently a lot of people stayed in town this year.

BRIAN
(surprised)
Really? Well I can’t imagine why.

ADAM
Yeah, I’d have to agree on that one. There are a bunch of people there already, but nobody is even expecting us to be in town. I had to tell Jordan not to tell anybody so that we can make it a surprise.

BRIAN
Dude, Jordan can’t keep secrets, he’s like a loudmouthed school girl.

ADAM
I took that into consideration, and so I told him I would pick his stupid ass up before the party.

BRIAN
Good call.

ADAM
Yeah.
(laughing)
So right now he’s sitting at his house freaking out. It’s great.

BRIAN
Well that’s what he gets for not being able to keep a secret. Is that where we are going right now?

ADAM
Yeah, it is, because it’s getting late and I want to get to the party, I’m getting antsy.

BRIAN
Oh yeah? Do you think Ashley will be there?

ADAM
(taken aback)
What? Ashley? I don’t know... I mean she might..

BRIAN
You mean, you hope she’s there.

ADAM
That’s not what I said. It’s most likely though, if she’s in town. I don’t know! I haven’t talked to her in a couple months.

Brian looks at Adam suspiciously. A sly smile spreads on his face.

BRIAN
Ok then. Well, Jordan better be ready to go when we get to his house.

Adam’s cell phone rings.

ADAM
Speak of the devil.
(beat)
Yyello.

INTERCUT WITH...

INT. JORDAN’S HOUSE - SAME

Jordan is pacing around his dining room with the phone placed firmly between his ear and shoulder.

JORDAN
Dude, where the hell are you?

ADAM
In my car driving to your house you impatient son of a bitch.

Jordan laughs.

JORDAN
I know, but hurry up. The party has started with out us.

ADAM
I am well aware of what we are missing but in order for our appearance to make an impact it must be in dramatic fashion.

JORDAN
Ok, well as long as you are on your way.

ADAM
I am, so keep your panties straight and I’ll be there before you can blink twice.

JORDAN
What?

ADAM
Peace.

Adam hangs up the phone, Brian stares at Adam.

BRIAN
Before you can blink twice?

ADAM
That was pretty lame wasn’t it?

BRIAN
Just a smidge.

ADAM
(disappointed)
Damnit.

Adam shakes his head and lowers it momentarily as he is still driving, he picks his head back up quickly and focuses his attention back on the road.

EXT. JORDAN’S HOUSE - LATER

Adam’s black Honda pulls into the driveway and the horn blares wildly. Adam sticks his head out of the window.

ADAM
(yelling)
Jordan! Hurry the hell up before we leave your ass here!

BRIAN
Dude, it’s late, are you trying to wake up the neighborhood?

ADAM
Late? Dude, it’s New Year’s fucking Eve, nobody’s sleeping.

The house’s front door swings open and JORDAN comes hurrying out. Jordan isn’t a big guy, just below average. A scratchy, yet trimmed beard covers his face. He runs up to the car and climbs into the back seat.

ADAM (cont’d)
To be honest, I feel kind of relieved to be back here.

Adam begins to back out of the driveway.

JORDAN
That’s weird, because for some reason I feel the same way. I guess there’s no feeling like being back at home, huh?

BRIAN
Where the hell have you been?

JORDAN
I’m just sayin’, I guess, I could only assume that.

ADAM
Yeah, I think that’s what it is. I mean, I was so ready to get out of this place, but now that I’m back it’s like.. well it’s like I finally belong somewhere. I just feel like I fit in here.

BRIAN
Kind of like a piece in a puzzle.
(beat)
A piece of a puzzle was made specifically for a particular puzzle. Now, the piece can be taken out and go to any other puzzle to visit, but it doesn’t have it’s own spot.

Adam, while paying attention to what’s behind him, stops the car and adds to the conversation.

ADAM
Also, there may be one or two puzzles where that piece can fit in, but it doesn’t complete the picture. Only when that piece is back in its own puzzle is the picture complete.

JORDAN
Damn, that shit is deep. Nice.

ADAM
Yup. So after that... let’s go see all our friends and get wasted.

JORDAN
Hell yeah!

EXT. ADAM’S HONDA - CONTINUOUS

The car’s headlights come on as the car takes off down the road.

EXT. APARTMENT COMPLEX - LATER

The black Accord pulls into the parking lot and finds a space. Adam, Brian, and Jordan step out of the car and begin walking up to the building.

INT. APARTMENT COMPLEX - THRID FLOOR - CONTINUOUS

Adam and his friends walk out of the elevator and head towards apartment 3015.

I/E. APARTMENT 3015 - CONTINUOUS

ADAM
Here we go. What time is it?

BRIAN
It’s about to be 9:20.

ADAM
Perfect. Oh, and I can hear everybody talking.. Sounds like everyone is here, that’s good.

Adam knocks on the door.

JORDAN
Why don’t you just walk in?

ADAM
Because it’s locked. Plus, this is more dramatic, everyone will be focused...

Adam is cut off by the door opening with Doug behind it.

DOUG
Welcome to... HOLY SHIT!
(laughing)
I can’t believe this!

DOUG walks out into the hall and gives Adam a big hug. Doug is by no means a small guy, he is stocky and burly. Short curly blonde hair bounces on top of his head as he backs away from Adam, he then notices Brian. He gives Brian a hug as well. Jordan stands there with his arms open waiting for a hug. Doug looks at him and pushes his face playfully. Jordan laughs.

JORDAN
What? I don’t get no love?

A sly smile spreads across Jordan’s face. Doug laughs and gives in.

DOUG
Come here you little bastard... I love ya man.

JORDAN
Thanks buddy. How ya doing?

DOUG
Oh I can’t complain.. Come on in guys, this is gonna be great.

ADAM
Man, I haven’t seen a lot of these people in oh...
Adam is cut off as he walks inside to everybody in the apartment yelling practically in unison.

EVERYBODY
Adam!

Sure enough that’s him, Adam. A favorite among the group.

ADAM
Hey guys!

A few people walk up to Adam, including ASHLEY, a blonde haired, blue eyed beauty. Time seems to slow down as Adam’s eyes meet the site of this girl. He can’t remember the last time he saw anything so beautiful. Adam shakes his head and everything returns to normal.

ZACK, the guy from before that was making the joke is also with Ashley. Zack is Adam’s size, except he has spikey blonde hair and mysterious gray eyes. Adam is visibly happy to see both of them as he hugs Ashley and picks her up off the ground, twirls her around once and sets her back down.

ZACK
My turn!

ADAM
(laughs)
Yeah right! You haven’t earned a hug and a twirl son!

ZACK
Well what did she do to earn it? I don’t swing both ways man, there are some things I just won’t do.

ADAM
Well then you will just have to find another way. How’s this for starters though.. Come here you moron!

Adam grabs Zack and gives him a big hug.

ADAM (cont’d)
That’s just a preview of things to come if you behave.

ASHLEY
Addy, I’ve missed you soooo much!

Ashley gives Adam another hug.

ADAM
I know! I’ve missed you a whole bunch too!

ASHLEY
Brian! You too!

Ashley runs over and gives Brian a big hug, however, Brian isn’t as expressive as Adam and just settles for a simple hug.

ASHLEY (cont’d)
I can’t believe you guys are here!

BRIAN
Well you’d better believe it because we are standing right here. How’ve you been?

ASHLEY
I’ve been good, what about you? Meeting a bunch of girls I bet.

BRIAN
What? Naw, that’s not me, you know that. I just want one girl.

Ashley pushes Brian playfully.

ASHLEY
(laughs)
Yeah right! One girl my ass, you little pimp, you could never just pick one.

BRIAN
Come on now! Hey! You know I’m not like that anymore.

ZACK
When were you like that before?

Brian glares at Zack.

ASHLEY
How would I know anyway? I haven’t talked to you for over a year. Unlike Adam, you never keep in contact with me so I wouldn’t know whether or not you’ve changed.

ADAM
Damn Ash, touche.. She got you there Brian.

BRIAN
Well, I will give you that, but a phone works two ways you know.

ASHLEY
Well I figured you didn’t want to talk to me.

BRIAN
Why would you figure that?

ASHLEY
Because you never called me!

BRIAN
Dude.. Whatever, I’m here now.

Brian smiles and goes to talk to other people. Ashley runs up to Adam and puts her arm around his and stands close to him. Adam appears to be surveying the room seeing who is all there.

ADAM
Damn, I haven’t seen a lot of these people in such a long time! What up Eric! This is awesome. I’m gonna try and talk to them all.

ASHLEY
Well, don’t burn yourself out-

ADAM
Too late.

ASHLEY
(laughs)
And don’t neglect me.

Adam turns and looks Ashley in the eyes for a couple seconds, a smile then spreads across his face.

ADAM
You’re so adorable!

Adam reaches out and pinches Ashley’s cheek. He then walks off to socialize with all his old friends.
