My Stomach Is An Anchor

4-5-07

My stomach is an anchor
its’ tether escaping through my mouth
hitched
to a slowly moving ship that you command.
While I do not enter the sea
I want to seize
as you pull,
the ship moving steadily faster.
But all I can muster is the salt
from my eyes
or the sea,
and wounded heart
as your anchor rips free.
I wave
(a scarred and gaping entity)
and the clang of the massive chain
shakes the marrow of my bones.
You, gliding towards the edge of the earth.
I cry out trying to pierce the distance
but you don’t hear me
and you don’t seem to care.

There was a time after losing a beloved friend when I felt a huge weight in my stomach, so this poem very strongly reminded me of that feeling of being stuck in place while someone else tore loose. There is a cinematic quality to this poem...that makes it easy to imagine a huge chain pouring out your mouth, holding you steady. It's sad, accurate, and beautiful mixed up together.
