Afewonro

'Oodua Afewonro'
from where cometh thee?

Landing softly
on the earth
with chicken,corn and sand
to bring to birth
the mother land.

They knew before hand
that with chains
thou would land

But they knew not
that these great seeds
thou would spring forth!

'Oodua Afewonro'
from where cometh thee?

Note:
i wrote this poem after listening to my granmum talk about the history of the yorubas,a tribe in nigeria. For better understanding, 'Oodua' is regarded as the mythological father of the yorubas and 'afewonro' literarily means 'he that comes down with chains'my amusement lay in wondering where oodua came from!

An interesting mythical / mystical piece, even without the explanation the imagery conjours a father / procreator view.
