Humperdinck

What's in a Name?
How can you Explain?
Is it Literal?
How about Historical?
Mine is Biblical,
Is it Allegorical?
Or simply Nothing,
Which could be Anything,
A meaning now Empty.
Lost to time.
How can I make it mine?
A life growing on a vine,
Without the line,
With which to define,
A single life,
With a name.

Allegorical is used in a biblical sense often, since it is full of imagery and parables. Allegorical actually, in this context, would be that the name contains a story. I'd seperate this from biblical as Humperdinck's name could have been from the bible whereas the story of the name, or the symbol of the name could come from elsewhere.

Shaft, were you aware that Englebert Humperdinck (not the singer) wrote the opera, "Hansel and Gretel?" In fact that's where singer Engelbert (Note the spelling.) Humperdinck got his name which is a stage name.
I think that Humperdinck is a witty title. It smacks of Dr. Suess. I like the poem. I like how it intellectualizes "What's in a name?" but one part threw me. "Mine is Biblical, Is it Allegorical?" Allegorical IS Biblical, isn't it? Should you have placed a "But" before "Is it...?"

I thought a name was just a practical matter, a sound made for the means of identifying something. We communicate with language, so everything must be assigned sounds. I liked the title, as it contrasts this logic, saying 'what's this jackass trying to prove with this name "Humperdink"?!'

PS the first word of your poem is missing its apostrophe.

Good to see you using 'allegorical'...I'll have to check mt thesaurus. Fortunately I knew who you were alluding to literally and enjoyed your musing and using the comments to ponder on the use of a name. You were never a Humperdinck.

Humperdinck - Made up name for a singer called Englebert... The title here explains the poem.

I'm curious to know what a name explains...
