Can I Have My Key Back?

I had my shades on when I last saw you
I wore them like a veil
So you couldn’t see into my soul
And I couldn’t see your dirty fingernails
But I knew
That you’d been pulling up dirt

Cause as much as you don’t like it
I can read you like a book
Though I didn’t see you coming
I’ve had time to take another look.
And I’m sure
That you have done the same

Like some impressionistic painting
I watched you stare from across the room
Thinking you had truly found a beauty

But the closer that you came
You made a face without a name
And we both knew
You were just beholding a mess
Someone else had made.

I knew you had it coming
I had seen it in the past
And you know I’d been trying real hard
To answer the questions you would ask
Whether the words were coming out wrong
Or they just weren’t making it to your ears
We’ll never know
And that’s our curse, my dear.
