Reasons to Keep Doing It

The reality is that it's easy to be positive when circumstances are favorable. Students used to tell me, "I don't mind writing about a subject which interests me." Damn, people, that is everyone's position on everything! It's the purpose behind going into a field you love. The truth of real life is that not every chore, activity, requirement, state of mind, relationship, interaction...will be desirable.

What had distressed me the most in recent months was the creeping knowledge that I was not taking my own advice. As the days wore on, I somehow expected my negative circumstances to right themselves allowing my thoughts to fall into line.

When I realized (with a little help from my friends, whom I generally disparaged unmercilessly) it was my attitude that needed "righting," I then had to resist the urge to wallow in wasted time. It's a hazard, this brain of mine; it requires constant attention, like that crap in the back of the refrigerator. If I wait until what was convenient and visible is gone before looking into those forgotten containers..., well, you can be sure I'll find plenty of mold growing out of control.

It has to be a conscious decision that is maintained. Hey, I'm the first one to say it's not easy, and the more aging Tupperware discovered on the shelves the longer it's going to take to clean up.

So, I make a choice to believe, to go forward, to try, to smile, to live. Then don't look back.

Thank you, Keeper of the Peace, for your inspiration.

Hah, you are a doll, my parchment friend. Would that I, too, could remember my own sentiment with any applicative regularity.

You've hit the perverbial nail on the head. If we focus on our circumstances, they drag us down that ever decending staircase. Againm, "Truth" about the fact that all circumstances are temporary--like the snow you described. Spring is just around the corner. Potential is just that. We are the ones who determine whether or not we will reach past where we are to what we could be. Great share. Thanks. It's a good reminder. I should print it off and put it on the "frig." Janet

Thanks, my friend. Does it ever bother you that you might read this from someone who doesn't have a life threatening illness or condition? Like sometimes, I feel so weak that, at times, I am so monumentally depressed about the trappings of life when I have no hardcore reason to not just suck it up and tread the established path.

Well well well, this could very well relate to my current situation. I am currently a cancer patient, but my prognosis is excellent, and I'm looking to resume normal activity in about a month (I've already been accepted at one university). I've even got an essay on this. Anyway, well written, I can relate.
