Tips For Adopting A Stray

Tips for Adopting a Stray

It is hard to resist adopting a stray. If you've given in as I often have, here are some steps to simplify the process. The first step is the easiest...all you have to do is fall in love with a furry face in need of a home.

The second step is to get the animal off the street. Some animals will coming running up to you, ready to start a new life. Others are more hesitant. To calm a skittish animal, try crouching down to eye level and calling the pet in a soft, friendly voice. Don't be afraid to bribe your new friend with a treat.

Once secured, check for tags. No tags? Then your next step is to have the animal checked out by your veterinarian. This is especially important if you have other animals in the house. Your new friend may have parasites or a contagious disease. Do not allow your pets to mingle with a stray until it is checked out by a professional.

When at the vet, also have them check for a microchip. Many pet owners chip their pets instead of using tags. Most vets can scan for these chips quickly and painlessly.

Okay, your new friend is healthy but has no tags and no microchip. If you've decided to keep him then you need to contact the local human society. Some states require you to bring the dog in to be held for three days, some do not.

If your rescue does not, then all you need to do is post fliers in the neighborhood where your pet was found. If possible, run an ad in the local paper. If no one claims the pet after two weeks then he is yours.

One last thing, remember to have him altered and vaccinated so that he remains healthy and does not contribute to the pet overpopulation problem. The last and easiest step is to love him to pieces and let him love you back. Good luck with your new furry family member.
