Softly Spoken Condolences

Softly spoken condolences

fall on deaf ears

A refusal

to let go,

without cause and blind to mercy

Roughly drawn lines

splayed on skin

marking your age and

the drought through which you've

suffered

Reflections cast at you from

his pupil-less eyes

speak of his own victimization

at the hands of your cruel words

and deafening silences
