Florence On My Way To Meet You
cobbled stone memories
surface within
the walls of my veins
church bells ringing
penetrating through
the window of
my pensione
fronting Palazzo Vecchio
Statue of David
displayed for all
admiring his manhood
IL Duomo,
I climb your towers,
escalating Campanille Di Giotto
lour'd upon Firenze
Sistine Chapel
synagogue of my soul
engaging me with
an act of contrition
landscaped above the ceiling
Michaelangelo's frescoes
naked prophets,
benevolent models of creation
witness I must
the rise and fall of man
catching my breath
as I flee the Vatican
racing for the train
amidst strangers
calculating eyes
pardon my innocence
I pass
Florence on my way
to Rome
contemplating last judgment
back to Genesis
on my way to
meet you

| I agree with Teri about the sausages line...kinda too odd and jarring an image up against all the poetic beauty before and after it. What a lovely piece though. You can feel your love for the place with each word. |

| I've been to these places, and you've done great and wonderful justice to them! Your eloquent words, concise phrasing - pure magic, Joni. I wasn't too crazy about the line "amidst sausages", but that's JMO and a very minor thing compared to the scope of depth and beauty of your poem. Thank you again for your wonderful writing. :) |
