The Awkward In Us All
she chewed her gum in an odd sort of way- with her front teeth instead of her molars. instead of the round about motion that one would consider normal, like a cow chewing cud, she nibbled. coupled with her thin features; nose, face, shoulders- all narrow- this chewing motion gave her an air of rodent. a rodent among bovines.
the thin black frame of her glasses only added to the length of her face- exposing rather than hiding. not your typical nerd, this one truly tried to fit in. not to say others dont, but her efforts were painfully obvious. the girls hair twisted and pinned in a desperate attempt at the trendy "poof". the straggly mound of hair sat at the front of her hairline and flopped to the side weakly. her body varied some from the typical soccially inept. though her skin was pale and unhealthy and her frame absent of muscle, it seemed all her fat had accumulated in her chest. she kept her D cups covered though. maybe she didn't yet realize those were the answer to all her problems.
the girl's beady brown eyes were focused on a rather intelligent looking boy accross from her. she nibbled her gum quietly, watching him explain Langston Hughes' poem to his stocky friend. the young man was thin too- his shoulder blades poked through his thinning green shirt as if seeking oxygen... or just some sort of exposure, she hoped. her thoughts were scribbled across her reddened face. she wanted to get those shoulder blades some oxygen as soon as possible. these thoughts crossed her face most every monday, wednesday, and friday. the girl knew though, that no matter how hard she tried it was impossible to get his attention. he must like blondes. he's blond, and everyone knows blondes only date blonds. and the vicious cycle of society turns once more.
there she sits, a potentially beautiful woman hidden beneath acne, carefully chosen out-of-season accessories, and a fragile frame still wondering what she missed.
