A Voice

If only my gut had a voice
If only
It could trade
These careless words
For action
It could sing
The song of my heart
That's buried
Deep beneath the layers
Of all who have laid
Their head upon my breast
It could recite
The poetry of my soul
With perfect cadence
And inflection
Without interference
From all who have laid claim
To a piece of my world
If only my gut had a voice
It would call out
An invitation to you
To come sit by me
And slip your hand in mine
Forever
It would give
My heart permission
To let you in
And give my mind leave
Of worry and fear
And it would hum
The long slow melodies
Of my heart in your ear
It would give voice
To the words of my soul
That roll off the tongue
Like raindrops
Off the stained glass window
Of my memory
And it would rejoice
In it all
To have you by my side
To have you
Is all
If only
