The Chihuahua Cure
The Chihuahua was already old when her daughters gave it to her. Pearl knew why they got it. The Chihuahua Cure was a heap of nonsense as far as she was concerned.
It came from the animal shelter, seizing and shivering, with eyes almost bigger than its head. Eyes that followed Pearl like it couldn't stuff the whole picture of her in its tiny skull. Her daughter put steps next to Pearl's bed so the bitty thing could climb up on the bed with her.
Pearl thought it looked like a rat.

| Thanks, Lou...these are all new. I'm cranking out a story a day over on my blog for the month of February, so most of this stuff will go into edit once I'm out of that particular pressure cooker. |

I liked the story alot...but it feels like a vignette in a slightly larger story. I also think you might want to flesh out the "cure" in the story a bit. It truly was a cure in that it made her less lonely. I always love your tone and your characters.
You are always a joy to read. |

love that! i've looked after people whose health depends on their belief. sadly i look after more whose decline is also due to a destructive thought pattern
the kids up the road have asthma/ excema and i was shocked one day when josh developed an immediate whelt where our dog licked him. the family (of 4 children) have just been to the allergy doc, his eyes chihuahua popped when he heard they have 1 dog 1 cat 4 chooks 2 possums and frequently go country to sheep/horses etc plus 2 of them are at the agricultural high school my daughter goes to
as a nurse i don't mind what works,,,
still love the story
would love to chat with you too of course

| Hey, Geordie...from a medical standpoint--this is about a folkcure fairly common in this area. They believe having a Chihuahua will "take" your asthma, emphysema, COPD--any sort of breathing issue. It's very common to see people with portable O2 carrying around a Chihuahua. My theory is those little dogs seem to suffer from reverse sneezing--the canine version of postnasal drip--and it does sound like they are dying on you. If you rub their throat they'll stop gacking like that, but there is a superstition that the dog is actually taking the breathing problem from the owner. |

so well said. just the right "holding back" of emotional talk.
not sure what the allergy docs would say about dog/hair etc "curing" asthma but love the folklore sort of feel and it works!
enjoyed this a lot! can just picture that dog!!
