Thoughts on 'Valentines Day'
Its a funny thing isn't it? Valentines day. A kick in the teeth if your single, rubbing salt into the wound if you like.
I have perfected the ability to ignore such day.
Last year I went dress shopping with mother, this year it appears will be doing the same thing.
Not alot has changed in a year really though has it. Except maybe the fact that I screwed up majorly with the one guy I thought meant something. But that is another story.
So what is 'Valentines Day'?
'There are varying opinions as to the origin of Valentine's Day. Some experts state that it originated from St. Valentine, a Roman who was martyred for refusing to give up Christianity. He died on February 14, 269 A.D., the same day that had been devoted to love lotteries. Legend also says that St. Valentine left a farewell note for the jailer's daughter, who had become his friend, and signed it "From Your Valentine". Other aspects of the story say that Saint Valentine served as a priest at the temple during the reign of Emperor Claudius. Claudius then had Valentine jailed for defying him. In 496 A.D. Pope Gelasius set aside February 14 to honour St. Valentine.' (http://www.pictureframes.co.uk/pages/saint_valentine.htm)
Today card manufacturers and chocolatiers sell their wares to us, the gulible and superficial general public. It's as if a card, a flower or a box of chocolates can speak the words of a heart. But it is just a cover for a heart which cannot speak for itself? Would you rather have a love who buys you something once a year, on a day which is now so commercialised? Or would you rather one who brings you a cup of tea first thing in the morning, cooks dinner when they get in from work, pulls that stray hair off your best jacket or straightens your tie, and accidently forgets this one day, 14th Feb, because it's just the same as all the rest of those in the year. Surely all the days you are with that love are special days.
We make this day special in our own ways, as we do any others. At the end of the day one will go to bed, alone or with one's love, but the next day will be 15th Feb. Will this day not be a special and loving as the last?
If not, I would rather my man bring me tea in bed, and pulls the stray hair off my best jacket.
So what am I actually trying to say here? I think mainly, that toys, cards and chocolates fail to mean anything if that person only thinks to buy it or say it on one day of the year.
What does Valentines day mean to you?
