Never Knew--Wee Challenge #26

She sighs loudly, even in her sleep. Yoga or meditation would benefit her greatly, I’m sure. She walks around the house on the balls of her feet, creeping quietly, even though she lives quite alone.

I can sense her wandering below me as I sit beside vents in the space above her, or beside the heat duct that runs to her bedroom. I listen as she complains to her friends about the raccoons in the eaves, but she never investigates the noises.

At night, she sleeps and I slide down into the living room. I, too, walk around the house on the balls of my feet, creeping quietly. I eat only that which won’t be missed. I couldn’t resist the lone Dove ice cream bar one particular night. The next evening, I heard her open the freezer. She stood there a while, surely wondering where it went.

Fun Read. The opening of the second paragraph felt menacing, made me wonder what might happen. The sprinkling in of raccoon noises worked well, too. The final visual image of her perhaps standing dumbfounded in front of the open freeze, the lightening of the tone, was in itself a treat.

Do you know as I posted MY comment to your comment, I thought, well, the squatter did steal the last Dove bar. That's a pretty chicky thing to do. Ha! You're funny.

Do you know, as I wrote my comment, I thought, 'Maybe it's not a woman', but s/he seemed very female to me! I think it was being unable to resist the chocolate ice cream...

It never occurred to me that the squatter could be a female. Strange! Thanks Rosie. And Mitchell, if you eat my last Dove bar again, I'm gonna start charging you rent.

I loved this, Nora. I particularly like the way you don't realise the narrator isn't just in a flat above her until the 2nd para. She doesn't seem malign, your squatter. I think I would have preferred her to our rather noisy rodent...
