Journey On

©2004, Janet K. Poludniak

It was just a tiny river,
but her waters seem to swell
as they passed beneath the bridge.
Would they lead to hope or hell?

It should have been a special night
with flowers and a ring,
but he had left her standing there.
His words had left their sting!

She stood and watched for hours,
tears streaming down her face
and falling to the water
to mingle there with grace.

She heard the river taunting,
"I'll hold you if you dare!
Come run with me into the night
and drown your deep despair."

Her broken heart was full of pain,
but there was still tomorrow!
Perhaps if she just waited,
the light would lift her sorrow.

She knew the sun would rise again
with light and hope to share,
to free her from her mourning,
that the river could not bear.

She bid the river, "Journey on;
and take my tears away.
I will not run with you tonight,
but all my sorrows may."

With hope, she turned toward home,
spent tears in the river's flow.
A hope was birthed in one that night
the river did not know.

Thanks for the encouragement. I have noticed that many do not use capitals, punctuation, rhyme or rhythm. I guess you'd call that "poetic license." Still, glad I'm not the only one. Janet

I like the fact that the poem sticks to the conventional rhythm and rhyme with reason in it. I am also happy about the positive ending. Its a beacon... My style of writing poems is sometimes similar, so I am able to identify with your thoughts here. Nice !!

That's true, but we can have the specific force before a tragic onset. Like I said before, it we keep our eyes fixed on the problem we can't move on, but when we have an anchor to hold us steady, a crisis is more like a bump in the road. We grieve it for awhile and allow the anchor to hold us steady. When the tears are spent, we know there is something bigger which keeps us from being swallowed up in the tragedy. For me that anchor is my faith. That is what I wanted to portray here. Thanks for visiting and for your comment. J

I enjoyed the cadence of this poem, but I wondered at the impetus for her "change of heart."
How did she get to "...But there was still tomorrow!"
Maybe it's just me, but when I am ensconced in despair, SOMETHING specific is all that brings me back from the edge -
