Wee Stories #26: Fistful of Coins

Selena wrapped her tattered coat tightly around herself as the air chilled. She quickly buttoned up and shoved her hands in her pockets, rubbing her thin fingers for warmth. Her right hand began banging against some objects inside her coat. She grabbed the mysterious items and peered down into her palm; they were some old, dull coins. Her face warmed at the discovery, and she ran until she found the nearest bakery. She hadn’t eaten in days. As she entered the store, her nostrils filled with the aroma of freshly baked pastries. The smells were so strong that she almost fainted before the counter. The baker asked her what she wanted. “Two rolls, please,” she said as she placed the fistful of coins in front of him. He handed her the purchase and wished her a good day. That night, she served the rolls to her children for supper.

What a depressing scenario but you do make it vivid enough for the reader to actually smell the bakery. Makes one wonder how she got this way.

Oh, so sad, and unfortunately, not fiction for far too many of us. Thanks for a timely reminder, Chana

Usually winning the pocket lotto means pleasant surprise, not abject relief. This is a good reminder for people who have more than enough to think about what it might be like to not eat for days on end AND put other people first. Good story and good delivery, Chana. The details make the scene very present to me.
