"God"
Today I was contemplating on whether or not God really exists. I then came to the realization that there were only a few points in my life where I ever really even considered the existence of a “higher power”.
As a child I “believed”. I’m not so sure if you can really even call it this. For as children, are we not taught this is right, and that is all? Are we not forced into onoe thing, not given the chance to examine other possibilities? We are almost brain washed into believing this is right, argue not. I see problems in this. Yes, as a child we are not capable of fully understanding much about religion or the likes. However, why can we not just put religion on hold til an older, more mature and knowledged age?
As for the second time I considered believing, I must admit it was for egoistic motives. I prayed. Yes, I prayed to protect myself from a huge mistake.
This brings me to another point. This is exactly an example of how religion is just a selfish means of helping and protecting oneself.
The world cannot seem to recognize their selfish motives in worshipping.

A nice introspective piece and you made some good points. Keep up the questioning!
I definately agree with waiting until an older age for the spiritual stuff. I don't believe in forcing anyone into it. Then it's forced, shallow, and unnatural.
My dad regrets not making us go to church growing up.. I'm personally glad.. When I finally did start studying spirituality (not religion), it was for my own reasons, when I could appreciate it, to satisfy my own curiosity, to know more about myself and what was going on inside of me.
And yea.. most worship for selfish reasons: self-gain, a better worldly life, a better afterlife (still a better worldly life in my opinion), out of fear of pain/hell, etc. Most worship, believe, parrot back what they've heard, but never find out the truth for themeselves. |

This goes for anything as children. Hell look at people's political views, they almost always represent that of their parents. It's not brain washing so much as it is the natural order of rearing. If you consider religion as brain washing at a young age, then so is language, math, and basic science.
Either way, your stand point is haphazardly correct and appreciated.
I like the fact you said Selfish motives in worshipping. Isn't it though?
Par done and then some. |
