Army of Distance
You & I
are as a circle
who’s circumference has been invaded
by means of a broken link in the eternal chain.
In comes the army of distance,
with its soldiers standing battle-ready.
& what match are we
against their weapons of pride and possessiveness?
Precarious by nature, we tumble
like building blocks
in the hands of a reckless child.
You are sitting in your corner
painting charcoal warrior lines beneath your eyes.
I am on the opposite side of the room
And I refuse to color in-between the lines.
And so here we are
At stage “failure to communicate”
And we’re blaming external forces
for the fortress we couldn’t uphold.
& every day it gets easier
to walk alone,
but a thousand times more difficult
to block out the sounds of your steps behind me.
