While You Were Napping
Your calf crept out from beneath the comforter as if afraid to expose the full length of your leg. Your right arm stretched up around the pillow with your fingers curled against your cheek and your breath smelled of the sweet taste of dreams. Filaments of curly brown hair littered the pillow from the night-long tug of war involving 300-thread count sheets, intertwined limbs, and half-awake kisses left on open skin illuminated by moonlight.
I stood above the bed and buckled my belt while staring down at you. An amused grin danced across my lips as I slipped the t-shirt over my head and smelled the remnants of your perfume along the collar, right next to the accidental rum spot you created while we danced. It was then I noticed the mud on my jeans and on your shoes and remembered piggy-backing you to the car after we realized how much mud remained from the week’s thaw. I remember you apologizing and me waving it off. We laughed and grinned at each other while the car warmed up in the parking lot, my hand along your thigh just so I could feel the warmth of you.
I carried you inside and you stumbled your way to the bedroom, leaving a shirt near the closet, your socks near the bathroom, and your shirt thrown across the back of the sofa before you passed out face first into your ocean of pillows. A mirror image of this very moment, I laughed at your sprawled body and half asked myself which part of the bed I’d be sleeping on before sliding you over and maneuvering my way beneath the blankets.
A formless sleep-monster on top of the mattress, your body shifted beneath the fabric as I slid my keys into my pocket with a muted jingle. Checking that I had everything, I crawled onto the bed and straddled you, landing soft good morning kisses on your cheeks and neck as your eyelids fluttered open in a smile and I whispered. “I want to lick my way along every delicious curve of your porcelain skin, tasting each inch as if it were the last time I'd have the use of my tongue and if you give me the time, I’ll find the words to keep you melting as long as you’d like.”
You ran your hand along my furry cheek and up through my hair while a large sleepy grin spread across your face. You nodded and ran your nails down my chest as I kissed you one last time and left you to your noon-dreams.
