The Way We Never Were

I often reminisce
Upon the way we never were
The smiles we never gave
The laughs we never shared
The memories
And the moments where
We held each other deep
In vacant stare
A hand that reached
But touched the air
Perhaps we tried
But knew that it was never there

I cannot help recall
The muddy water-coloured scrawl
The writing on the wall
That said all we could say
To trip on love
But not to fall

We strayed into each other's lives
And faded in the sun
While others thrived

Remember when we cried?
Nor I
We never did
We never tried
To hide unbroken-hearted
Love that never satisfied
Who would deny?
To have not love
For all its worth
Is not to die...

I simply love this poem. Putting everything in reverse is very clever and it works exceptionally well. The rhythm and rhyme works well and is not forced which is a big plus. Nothing more frustrating that a predictable poem, this most certainly is not... I would love to highlight certain parts I enjoyed more but that would mean I would have to paste the whole poem here. What I like is that the speaker do not seem to be bitter about it, I do not sense any regrets. Fantastic read!

Oh my gosh! That is simultaneously beautiful and sad. My heart weeps for you and hopes you're better now.
