jazz in the night

jazz in the night
all aglow in shades of grey
i notice how she sways her presence to the beat
bar haze clouds my view but
i won’t miss one subtlety of her
i groove [lose the beat] so we laugh
and talk through the booming murmur
sharp trumpet blats and piano slaps
and everyone else talking through the same.

and she glances over at me
to visually approve that solo
ends up approving my gaze
damn if i didn’t lose that beat
